Detox Diet - What You Can do to Get Rid of Toxins

Another name for detox is body cleansing and it is basically a treatment or a slimming diet in which the build-up of toxins and other harmful elements in your body are removed through practicing certain restrictions in your diet, changing some lifestyle habits and also taking some laxative and bowel cleansing supplements or aids. Some people have advocated the advantages to this treatment while others have said that it is purely a gimmick and that our bodies are more than capable of cleaning themselves. In this section I will explore the different schools of though and look into each argument.

The Elements of the Detox Diet
Most detox or body cleansing diets are a basic combination of fasting, raw foodism and high consumption of vegetables and fruits together with an elimination of foods like caffeine, alcohol and processed manufactured foods. Almost all the different plans that you can buy are generally a combination of these diet elements in different ratios and at different time allocations. It is because of this that we feel that anyone who is looking to try this diet simply search for all the information from sources like this online and simply follow them. There is no value in buying detox and body cleansing “systems” or programs.

The first element of a detox diet that we will look at is fasting. Over the centuries and even in many common religions there is something stated about the importance of fasting to keep your body and soul clean. Fasting in the strictest sense of the word is abstaining from food and drink for a period of time. For our purposes the fasting element of a detox diet is mostly partial and isn’t full. Partial because food is still taken in and drinking liquids are actually increased. Research has indicated that there are actually many benefits to controlled fasting which include a reduction in the risk of cancer, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and for some reason a slowing of the aging process. The reduction in the number of calories that you take in means that there is much less work to be done by your digestive systems. This means that more of your body’s energy can be diverted to cleansing activities. The cleansing can also be done more efficiently as the amount of toxin intake is reduced substantially allowing the body to cleanse itself more thoroughly.

The next element of a detox diet is something called raw foodism. It is basically a movement where people eat and drink raw foods and juices. Some people may be skeptical of this at first but because of the advances in storage and speed in which food is taken from the farm and is available at the markets today, eating most of your vegetables and fruits raw is a very safe thing to do. There naturally is a higher risk of food poisoning but with proper preparation work and due caution you can eat most vegetables and fruits raw. The argument is that raw vegetables and fruits have greater amounts of live enzymes and beneficial live matter compared to cooked vegetables. Important vitamins and minerals might be destroyed in the cooking process and thus lead to sub-par levels of nutrition. With detox and cleansing diets you will need the extra vitamins and minerals they provide along with the beneficial enzymes which in itself also function as cleansing agent.
